What is uPVC?
uPVC stands for unplasticised polyvinyl chloride. Standard PVC is softened with chemical plasticisers to make it flexible; remove those plasticisers and you get a rigid, strong material capable of bearing the weight of a window frame without creeping or distorting over time. That rigidity is the key property: uPVC holds its shape decade after decade, keeps the double-glazing unit sealed, and maintains the draught-proofing compression around the frame. The name is sometimes written as UPVC (without the lower-case u), but both refer to the same material.
uPVC became the dominant UK window frame material during the 1980s and 1990s, as householders replaced single-glazed timber windows in large numbers. Today it accounts for the overwhelming majority of domestic window replacements. Lifespan and maintenance
A properly installed uPVC window from a reputable manufacturer will last 20 to 25 years. That is not dramatically shorter than aluminium (which tends to run 25 to 30 years) and is vastly longer than the single-glazed timber windows most uPVC installations replace. In practice, the sealed double-glazing unit between the panes may show some fogging after 15 to 20 years as the edge seal degrades, but the frame itself will still be sound: only the unit needs replacing at that point, not the whole window.
Maintenance requirements are minimal by design. The frame will not rot, rust or need repainting. Cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft cloth once or twice a year keeps the frame looking its best. A drop of light oil on the hinges and locking points every two or three years prevents stiffening. That is genuinely all that is required across a 20-plus year lifespan. There is no sandpaper, no primer, no topcoat and no annual window-painting weekend to schedule.
